Children's Champions of Madison County honored at city commission, fiscal court

Feb. 28—Local governments named the month of March 'Be a Children's Champion' Month during the recent Richmond City Commission meeting and the Madison County Fiscal Court.

The month is to honor the little things that citizens can do to make a big difference in the lives of children.

Phillis Adams was honored during both sessions of local government meetings with proclamations stating that March will be 'Be a Children's Champion' month.

"I felt so good listening to some of the things that have gone on already, about people working together at this meeting," Adams said during the Richmond city commission meeting.

Adams also mentioned Madison County Coroner, Jimmy Cornelison, who's been a big help to her, helping with drug prevention programs for Children's Champions of Madison County.

This all comes ahead of Kids Mall Madness, which is this Saturday, March 2.

"Why is it important?" Adams said. "Because the more successful that children are [with] having the proper environment to live in means that they're going to be a successful adult."

Adams told those in attendance, that's why Children's Champions does what they do.

One of the big things done to promote the month is a billboard contest.

Many kids throughout the elementary schools in Madison County participate in this contest.

Shannon Johnson's Zaiden Harvey won this year's billboard contest and will have his art displayed throughout Richmond and Berea on billboards throughout the county.

"[These billboards] help to get the message out to folks that are driving by," Adams said.

Kids Mall Madness will take over the Richmond Mall this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
