Child dies after being left inside vehicle in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Police are investigating the death of a child left in a vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in a parking lot in Phoenix, according to fire officials.

The address is that of a Washington Elementary School District support facility.

Phoenix fire officials said they responded to the address for a report of a child found in a vehicle, but when crews arrived they were unable to resuscitate the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Phoenix police still were at the scene late Tuesday afternoon, and additional information was not available, including the age or gender of the child.

Tuesday's death marked the fourth child fatality in a hot car in 2019 in Arizona.

Most recently, a 3-year-old girl died after being left in a hot vehicle in Gilbert on Sept. 3 for at least two hours, according to Gilbert police.

A report in early July said 17 children had died in hot cars midway through 2019 across the country.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the inside of a car can heat up to 120 degrees in 30 minutes even when the outside temperature is 85 degrees.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix said the temperature was forecast to reach 90 degrees. It’s unclear what the temperature was inside the van.
