Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes opens up about his friendship with Lakers star LeBron James

The Chiefs’ bye week afforded quarterback Patrick Mahomes a rare opportunity to watch Sunday’s NFL games from his couch.

As he took in the action, Mahomes was playing with his 9-month-old daughter, Sterling, and he had an epiphany. Mahomes shared his thought on Twitter.

That caught the eye of Lakers star LeBron James, who is a father to two sons and a daughter.

During his weekly interview on KCSP (610 AM), Mahomes was asked Monday about James retweeting him.

“I’ve talked to him a couple times and kind of built a little bit of a friendship there,” Mahomes said. “I mean, obviously, I have a ton of respect for the guy but it was kind of a spur- of-the-moment tweet, I was just sitting there playing with Sterling. and I was like, ‘Man, this is cool. Being able to see a little you just kind of growing up,’ and so I kind of tweeted that out.

“He has a couple sons and a daughter that are all great athletes and great people. So I know it’s just a cool moment to be a dad and be able to see a little you growing up.”

A year ago, Mahomes joined James’ More Than a Vote non-profit organization, which encourages people to vote, so the two have more than a social-media relationship. Mahomes also has seen James play with the Lakers.

Mahomes, who has won an NFL MVP award, admitted being star-struck the first time he talked with James, a four-time NBA award winner.

“He was someone that I watched growing up, my whole entire life pretty much, him dominating and he’s still dominating the league,” Mahomes said on 610 Sports. “And so it definitely was a surreal moment to talk to him the first time you meet him and know he’s just kind of, he’s a real dude, just like everyone else..

“And just kind of building that relationship. Got some advice from him. He’s a great guy, a great guy.”
