Chief appraiser awaiting trial

May 20—The new chief appraiser for the Ector County Appraisal District is awaiting trial on an aggravated assault charge in Brown County.

According to Brown County records, Layne Young, 54, was indicted Feb. 15 on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

Young is accused of "waving or pointing a gun" at a woman with the same last name during an argument on July 29, 2023, his indictment stated.

Young was booked into the Ector County jail April 13 and released after posting a $25,000 surety bond.

ECAD Chairman Gary Johnson did not reply to text messages asking questions about Young's current employment status. According to his Facebook profile, Young went to work for ECAD in June 2000.

Prior to being the chief appraiser, the Permian High School graduate was the assistant chief appraiser.

Ector County Judge Dustin Fawcett said the ECAD board discussed Young's situation in early May, but took no action.

"They took no action, but that's their jurisdiction," he said. "As far as mine goes, they've been doing a good job. I met with him a few months after he took the role on, I guess last month and everything has been smooth."
