People who have celiac disease, or otherwise have an intolerance to gluten, now finally have an option when they visit Chick-fil-A. But first, they have to assemble the sandwich.

The fast-food chain announced Monday it was introducing a new gluten-free bun, made with quinoa and amaranth, flavored with molasses and raisins, and dusted with cornmeal on top. The bun was tested in three cities across the U.S. last year and is now being rolled out to all stores.

"The texture of the bun is not too heavy and most similar to a muffin - soft and springy, not crumbly or dry. It tastes good eaten right out of the package and does not require toasting," Leslie Nesage, Chick-fil-A's senior consultant of menu development, told Today.com. The bun would most likely be ordered with grilled chicken, since the fried chicken contains bread crumbs.

But there's a big difference if you order gluten-free: everything comes pre-packaged and you have to assemble it. That's because kitchens at Chick-fil-A are not gluten-free, and they want to make sure your food doesn't accidentally get contaminated. Each part of the new sandwich is certified to be free of gluten - but it does cost an extra $1.15 on top of your normal sandwich.

Few fast-food chains have offered gluten-free buns so far. Right now, Shake Shack and Red Robin do, but Chick-fil-A may be the first restaurant of its kind to introduce such an option. It's a relief for fast-food customers who want something, anything, other than some lettuce leaves.
