Chicago Med's new doctor could be set for love with an existing character.

The series recently cast Blindspot star Luke Mitchell in the role of Dr Mitch Ripley, with the character set to debut on tonight's (January 17) season 9 premiere.

However, co-showrunner Andrew Schneider has teased to TVLine that there may be a potential romantic connection between Mitch and Dr Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram), with the newcomer forming “large positive connections” with her and Dr Dean Archer (Steven Weber).

It was previously teased that Mitch also has history with Dr Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), fellow showrunner Diane Frolov further explaining: “We have a really good backstory with him [and] Charles. So that’s coming into our storytelling, which we’re excited about.

“Charles knew him as an adolescent, and some things went bad in that relationship, and he definitely is carrying some resentment, and Charles is carrying some guilt.”

Schneider elaborated: “This a guy who had a very rough childhood, and those rough edges are still in the character.”

“He’s very smart," added Frolov. "He had a full scholarship to Columbia. He’s really an ace. But he grew up in Chicago, and, as Andy says, he had a very rough background.”

However, it seems Mitch will make a positive impression on other staff, Schneider saying: “Nobody knows about his relationship with Charles except Charles. [To] everyone else, he’s this great doctor, charming guy.”

Meanwhile, it was previously reported that Mitch's debut in season premiere 'Row Row Row Your Boat on a Rocky Sea' may expand to a series regular role.

Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD are set to return on January 17, 2024 on NBC and Peacock in the US, and on Sky Witness in the UK.
