Chicago man accused of robbing USPS employee

CHICAGO — A Chicago man accused of robbing a U.S. Postal Service employee in November of 2023 has been charged.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois said 52-year-old Richard Thompson has been charged with one count of robbery of a Postal Service employee.

According to an indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Thursday, Thompson allegedly used a dangerous weapon to steal a USPS master key from a postal carrier in Chicago on Nov. 10, 2023.

Authorities did not provide details on the location of the alleged robbery.

Thompson, who was arrested on Thursday, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was later ordered to remain detained.

Thompson will appear before U.S. District Judge Andrea Wood for a status hearing on June 14.

If convicted, Thompson could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in federal prison.
