Cheyenne Mountain Zoo named one of the five best in U.S.

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — For the 8th year in a row, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZoo) has been named among the top 10 zoos in North America by USA TODAY. This year, CMZoo was named #5 Best Zoo in North America and also #2 Best Zoo Exhibit in North America, for its Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit.

The Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit features several species of animals that find their home in the mountains, including endangered Mexican wolves, Canada lynx, an Alaska moose, a bald eagle, two grizzly bears, three mountain lions, and four river otters.

VOTE: Help Cheyenne Mountain Zoo win best zoo in US

Travel experts chosen by USA TODAY chose nominees, and zoo supporters were able to cast their votes over four weeks for the nominees of their choice. CMZoo came in fifth behind Omaha’s s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium (#1), Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden (#2), North Carolina Zoo (#3), and Honolulu Zoo (#4).

CMZoo is focused on creating exhibits that bring people into closer contact with animals. They try to remove the physical barriers (maintaining the safety of both spectators and animals) so that people have a more immersive experience of zoo creatures. One example is CMZoo’s giraffe herd, which visitors can feed by hand.
