Chester County mail, identity theft suspect facing over 500 charges

CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – A Chester County man accused of stealing mail and hundreds of identities is facing more than 500 charges.

The Chester County District Attorney’s office says Joshua Hartmann, 41, of Spring City, is facing 437 counts of receiving stolen property. He’s also facing charges including identity theft, tampering with records, and unlawful use of a computer.

The charges were filed by Tredyffrin Township Police following a months-long investigation where Hartmann allegedly victimized hundreds of people.

The District Attorney’s office alleged Hartmann stole mail, modified the addresses on file with government agencies to steal their identities, and then used their names to acquire credit cards.

Hartmann is being held in the Chester County Prison with bail set at $300,000.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department partnered with the Lower Providence Police Department and the United States Postal Inspection Service during the investigation. The Defendant’s criminal acts impacted victims in Schuylkill Township, Phoenixville, Malvern, Tredyffrin, and two townships in Montgomery County, including Lower Providence Township and Upper Providence Township.
