Chesapeake Public Schools updates calendar with another day off

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Students and staff at Chesapeake Public Schools are getting an extended Memorial Day holiday weekend this year.

The Chesapeake School Board voted Monday night to approve a change to the current school year calendar. The calendar now reflects that school will be closed on Friday, May 24, 2024. Monday, May 27, 2024 was already a school holiday for Memorial Day.

Superintendent Dr. Jared Cotton said this marks the first school year since he has been Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools that they have not used a single day of banked time for weather-related closures. In order to mark this milestone, he recommended the board consider making May 24 an additional day off “to give back that banked time to our dedicated employees, hard-working students and their families.”

His recommendation received across-the-board approval.
