Chesapeake library set to close for yearlong renovation

The Russell Memorial Branch of the Chesapeake Public Library System, located at 2808 Taylor Road in Western Branch, will close temporarily on June 3 to undergo renovations.

The closure is necessary as the full collection of materials and all the shelving and furniture in the library must be moved out to conduct the renovations, the city said in a news release.

The children’s room will close on May 20.

Renovations are expected to be completed in early 2025, and will include updated restrooms, an additional study room, a 2,500-square-foot addition, new carpet, paint, and shelving and new furniture and interactive elements in the children’s area.

During the closure, patrons will be able to utilize the Chesapeake CARES Center, located at 3940 Airline Blvd., Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the library services including hold and pickup, one weekly storytime and drop-in children’s activities, summer reading logs, computers, printer, scanner and copiers and free Wi-Fi. There will also be a small, browsable collection of books for check out.

Patrons are also encouraged to visit other Chesapeake libraries, including Central Library, Dr. Clarence V. Cuffee Outreach & Innovation Library, Greenbrier Library, Indian River Library, Major Hilliard Library, and South Norfolk Memorial Library.

Project updates will be available online at ChesapeakeLibrary.org.
