Chesapeake law enforcement officer receives deputy of year honor
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A local law enforcement officer was honored by the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office for his work in chasing down an armed homicide suspect on Big Bethel Road in Hampton in January 2022.
Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan recognized Investigator Scott Chambers as the sheriff’s office’s deputy of the year. The Virginia and national sheriff’s associations recently named him as their deputy of the year, as well.
Chambers was shot twice during a U.S. Marshal Task Force mission in Hampton, as they were chasing the armed suspect, and he would spend more than a week in the hospital. He continues to serve.
“The shooting I got into from January 2022 was a team effort,” Chambers said. “I was able to save some lives that day and help our team out in a productive way.”
Chambers credits his law enforcement partners with saving his life that day.
Thursday’s ceremony honoring him as law enforcement officer of the year for the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office wasn’t his first honor.

A few weeks ago during a Washington, D.C. ceremony in which Chambers received a Purple Heart, he saved a man suffering from an apparent stroke or epileptic event. Chambers received a lifesaving award for that, as well.
