It's been two years since Chaz Bono underwent gender reassignment surgery, and his mother Cher is still getting the hang of using the right pronoun with her son.

Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson caught up with Cher and Chaz after he was awarded the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for promoting equality at the 23rd annual GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

"Cher, you were saying you get your pronouns mixed up sometimes," Shaun asked.

"I do... because it's like - we've talked about it - it's 40, 42 years of one thing and now...," Cher said

"Forty years of one thing," Chaz said, playfully correcting his mother. "It's 40 years, that's a long time."

"So, you know, I do it once in a while," Cher continued, explaining that she will still sometimes use "she" instead of "he," while referring to Chaz. "But, I'm getting better at it."

"You are getting better," Chaz added.

On Friday's Access Hollywood Live, Chaz told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover that he wasn't sure if his famous mother would be attending Saturday's show, and Cher told Shaun that despite feeling under the weather, she wanted to support (and surprise) her son on his big night.

"I wasn't feeling good and then I thought, you know what, it doesn't make any difference because Chaz has said, 'You know, this is the biggest night of my life,' and I went, 'Well, I'm sorry that I'm not going to be able to be there,'" Cher recalled. "And then I thought, this is insane! You know, this is crazy, and so a couple of days ago I thought, not only am I going, I'm going to make it a huge surprise, and it was."

An overjoyed Chaz explained what the night meant to him - especially with his mom and stepmom Mary Bono by his side.

"It's just a great honor because I so believe in the work that GLAAD does and I have such a rich history with the organization," Chaz said. "To get this after, after all these years, really means something to me... it's very personal."

As for Cher's over-the-top wig at Saturday's event, the star explained her choice behind the bountiful 'do.

"This is homage, this is homage," she told Shaun. "This is beautiful black homage."
