"If those responsible are not held accountable, and if Congress does not act responsibly, this will remain a cancer on our constitutional republic, undermining the peaceful transfer of power at the heart of our democratic system," Cheney said.

"We will face the threat of more violence in the months to come, and another January 6th every four years."

The Wyoming representative is one of just two Republican members of a House special select committee probing the events of January 6, when a mob of Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to halt Congress's certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

Cheney is one of a small number of Republicans who put responsibility for the deadly riot on the outgoing president, who repeatedly and falsely claimed that his election loss was tainted by fraud and urged his supporters to "fight."

She was stripped of her party leadership role after she continued to point out Trump's false claims of election fraud.

Cheney and another Republican, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, joined a select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot, over the outcry of their party's leaders.
