Chemung County Sheriff’s Office to host boater safety classes

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has announced the dates for its annual boater safety classes, which will take place in the coming months.

Six classes will be held between the months of April and May, all of which are free of charge.

All of the classes will be held on a Saturday and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with 30 minutes allotted for lunch. Attendees may bring their own lunch or go out for food, depending on time.

The classes will be held at the following dates and locations:

  • April 6 – Golden Glow Fire Department

  • April 13 – Big Flats Community Center

  • April 20 – West Elmira Fire Department

  • May 4 – Southport Fire Department

  • May 11 – Golden Glow Fire Department

  • May 18 – West Elmira Fire Department

The class is limited to 30 people, and the youngest age a person can attend the class must be 10 years old by the date that the class is held.

Anyone interested in attending the class must pre-register by contacting the Sheriff’s Office at 607-737-2987 extension 74104. Spots for the class are given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This year, everyone who was born after Jan. 1, 1978, must complete the safety course, but beginning in 2025, all motorboat operators, regardless of age, will be required to take it.
