Chelsea to face Wrexham at Levi’s Stadium this summer

(KRON) — English soccer powerhouse Chelsea Football Club will face Wrexham AFC this summer in a friendly match at Levi’s Stadium. The match, set for July 24, is part of Wrexham’s summer tour of the United States.

As a six-time English Premier League champion, Chelsea FC is one of the powerhouses of English and European soccer. Wrexham, on the other hand, play in the fourth tier of England’s professional soccer pyramid, EFL League Two.

The Welsh team, however, is well-known to American audiences through the FX series “Welcome to Wrexham,” which documents the team’s rise to prominence under the ownership of American screen actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The match at Levi’s will be a rematch of a meeting between the two teams last summer at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. That match was a sellout.

“We’re looking forward to returning to the United States for our summer tour, and the match at Levi’s Stadium against Chelse promises to be an exciting and memorable occasion — as well as an important part of our pre-season preparations,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson on the club’s website.

“It is great to be playing Wrexham once again, following the success of last year’s encounter in Chapel Hill,” said Chelsea CEO Chris Jurasek. “We look forward to playing in front of our loyal supporters based in California at the Levi’s Stadium, which is sure to create a wonderful atmosphere.”

The match between the two English teams is one of several high-profile soccer events set to take place at Levi’s Stadium this summer. The San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer will take on Los Angles FC at the stadium in May.

The stadium will also play host to a pair of Copa America fixtures with Ecuador taking on Venezuela on June 22 and Brazil facing Colombina on July 2.
