Chelsea Clinton Responds To SNL Cast Member’s Joke

Chelsea Clinton responded to a joke made by ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Vanessa Bayer at the expense of former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Chelsea Clinton was honored at a the ‘Variety’ Power of Women Luncheon in New York City Friday for her work with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which works to fight childhood obesity. Following a joke made by ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Vanessa Bayer at the expense of Clinton’s mother, former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, the honoree delivered a powerful response.

“Okay we have some pretty amazing honorees this afternoon: Jessica Chastain, Gayle King, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald, Tina Knowles, Shari Redstone and Chelsea Clinton. And they all have one thing in common: None of their moms are president,” Bayer said, receiving groans from the audience.

Clinton didn't address the remarks until the end of her acceptance speech, during which she said she was thankful for her mother's ability to lead by example.

“I’m particularly proud and grateful for the example that my mother has always set,” Clinton said, adding, “It’s always better to get caught trying than to never have tried at all.”

After finishing her speech about childhood obesity and protecting the needs of children, Clinton took her opportunity at the podium to respond to Bayer’s remark. “Vanessa, we may be able to say in this room today that no one’s mother is currently president, but someday, someone’s will be” she said.
