Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City

Fernando Torres struck in the very final minute of normal time to hand Chelsea three precious points as they edged Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening. Andre Schurrle tapped home the opener after 33 minutes following a brilliant run and set up from Torres, and although a Sergio Aguero thunderbolt leveled matters within moments of the restart, the day belonged to the Blues as their £50million signing secured the win on 90 minutes. The result took the Blues level in second place with Liverpool, above their title rivals on goal difference, with both sides two points below leaders Arsenal. City, meanwhile, finished the day in seventh, three points outside of the top four after the opening nine rounds of top-flight fixtures. The Blues worked themselves a really good chance to open the scoring after just three minutes as Schurrle clipped a wonderful ball over the defence to find Gary Cahill, but even after getting away with what appeared a clear off-side decision the defender couldn't keep his composure and lashed a wild shot over from just a few yards out. City came more into the game after that moment and enjoyed plenty of possession, and Aguero looked to have worked a great scoring chance after wriggling past two markers and having a pop at goal, although the Argentina international couldn't get the right connection and Petr Cech was able to make a simple save. With 30 minutes gone on the clock Torres looked for all the world like he would open the scoring as he got himself on the end of Ramires' perfectly placed delivery before controlling with his chest and having the whole of the goal to aim at, but the Spain international somehow corked his shot over the crossbar from just a few yards out. Just three minutes later, though, Torres made up for that horror miss as he all too easily ghosted past Gael Clichy on the right before running into the area and rolling the ball across goal where Schurrle was on hand to tap home his first goal for the Blues. Torres looked an inspired man after that assist and came desperately close to adding a second moments later as he broke through the middle of the park before cutting the ball back inside and hitting a wonderful curling drive from the angle of the 18-yard area, but the World Cup winner was cruelly denied by the width of the crossbar after Joe Hart had been comprehensively beaten. Three minutes before the break Aguero again got himself into a decent shooting chance, running onto a lay-off in the area before taking one touch to set and another to unleash, although his shot was from a very tight angle and Cech had it well covered. Barely four minutes after the restart City drew themselves level, and in quite sumptuous fashion as Nasri threaded a perfectly weighted ball through for Aguero, who unleashed a thumping first-time drive with his supposed weaker left foot to completely beat Cech at his near post and burst the back of the net. David Silva looked lively for the Citizens in the second period and forced a very decent save from the now very busy Chelsea goalkeeper as he just got a vital toe to the Spaniard's shot following a lovely move from the visitors. Silva looked the best player for Manuel Pellegrini's side in the closing stages and although he was left in a heap on the floor after dancing through the defence, he had managed to slip the ball to Aguero in the area, although the forward couldn't find the same accuracy he enjoyed earlier as he floated a delightful chip just wide of the top-right corner. With just seconds remaining in normal time, though, Chelsea struck the telling blow, a mix up between Matija Nastasic and Joe Hart ending with the pair colliding and allowing Torres to race through and tuck home from a tight angle to seal three vital points.
