Check your refrigerator. Raw milk contaminated with harmful bacteria: PA Department of Ag
Raw milk products from Apple Valley Creamery, which is sold under the Pure Pastures Dairy label, has been contaminated with a harmful bacteria called campylobacter, and it should be discarded immediately, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
One person became ill with campylobacteriosis after consuming the product, a news release states.
Samples of the raw milk tested positive for campylobacter, the release states.
An illness can cause diarrhea (often bloody), fever, and stomach cramps, the release states. Symptoms begin within two to five days and last about a week.
The affected products had sell-by dates of April 3, 2024 through May 2, 2024, the release states.
Apple Valley Creamery, which is based in Adams County, said in an April 30th Facebook post that the Pure Pastures Dairy Raw Milk currently is not available for sale because of potential bacteria contamination.
"When this issue has been resolved and the milk is confirmed safe, sales will resume," it states.
The state Department of Agriculture says the bacteria campylobacter is unrelated to the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which has not been detected in any dairy cattle in the Pennsylvania.
The Apple Valley Creamery Pure Pastures Dairy milk was sold in quart and half gallon glass containers at stores in 12 counties in the state.
