Check out the new batch of funny highway signs in New Jersey. Which is your favorite?

New Jersey residents are once again getting a chuckle at various points on the highway, as the digital signs reminding them to be safe on the road are back with new messages.

Local residents have taken to social media in recent days to share humorous signs from the state Department of Transportation they have noticed on their commutes. A user on the New Jersey subreddit page posted a photo Monday night of one such message, which read, "SLOW DOWN BAD DRIVERS AHEAD."

"Just saw this on my way home today … they are very correct!" the user wrote.

The same message was also featured in a Facebook group, with one commenter calling the sign "by far my favorite one so far."

Another sign reminded drivers of the rules of the road, with a message that read, "CAMP IN THE WOODS NOT THE LEFT LANE." Under New Jersey law, drivers are not permitted to drive in the left lane unless passing another vehicle.

The latest batch of signs began running on May 8 and are scheduled to be on display through the end of the month, DOT press manager Steve Schapiro said. The messages will run in a regular rotation across the 224 DOT signs on state and interstate highways, except for when the signs are reporting construction alerts, planned special events or other incidents.

"The new messages fit with our continued approach to reduce crashes and promote safer driving habits," Schapiro said.

The messages frequently make the rounds online shortly after they are unveiled, with locals appreciating the levity provided amid what can be a frustrating time in traffic on busy highways.

The signs are especially popular around the holiday season, featuring themed messages like "Reckless drivers are worse than fruitcake" and "Ho Ho Ho, please drive slow." Other year-round one-liners include "We'll be blunt, don't drive high" and "Get your head out of your apps."

Funny highway signs in New Jersey to end?

Unfortunately for fans of the signs, highway drivers likely will not be able to enjoy them for much longer.

The Federal Highway Administration, in its most recent manual released in December, said states will no longer be allowed to post humorous messages on highway signs because they can be distracting to drivers. The ban is set to go into effect in 2026.

Schapiro said the DOT will continue to follow federal guidance and keep signs safety-centered, reminding drivers of "behavioral issues" like speeding and texting while driving that can lead to crashes.

"Our goal is always to create attention to safety and that’s what these signs are about," he said. "It’s about making sure people read them, remember them, and drive safely."
