Charter election creates vacancies on city commissions

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Lansing Board of Police Commissioners and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Board will soon seek new members.

Muhammad Qawwee and Guillermo Lopez won the election in the Lansing Charter Revision Commission on Tuesday. That means they have to resign from their respective positions on city boards and commissions.

Qawwee serves on the recently created Diversity Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board. He serves as an At-Large member of the board and his term expires June 30.

“I knew it was a potential because it would be a conflict of interest,” he tells 6 News of the requirement he resign. “I’m working on the letter today or tomorrow, unfortunately.”

Lopez says he too was aware that if he won a seat on the Commission he would have to resign from his post on the Lansing Board of Police Commissioners. He represents the city’s Third Ward on that body, and his term expires June 30, 2027.

Appointments to boards and commissions for the city are done through the Mayor’s Office. In some instances, Lansing City Council has to approve the appointments.

There are 31 boards and commissions in the city – from plumbing to planning to building to income tax review. Click here to apply for a position.
