Charlotte police arrest 19-year-old with loaded rifle outside of Chambers High School

Charlotte police on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old man with a loaded gun outside of Julius Chambers High School.

The arrested man, Takiy Darryl Brownlee, wasn’t connected to a lockdown that drew police to the school, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in the news release. CMPD responded to a threat at the campus at approximately 11:15 a.m., where they found Brownlee in his vehicle with a loaded rifle. The officers found the initial threat to be unsubstantiated.

Officers arrested Brownlee on charges of possession of a firearm on educational property and possession of a firearm with obliterated/altered serial number.

“CMPD strongly urges parents and caretakers – do not bring weapons on campus or have them in your vehicle when you are picking up your child or dependent,” CMPD said in the news release.

Brownlee was previously arrested in March 2023 by officers from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, fleeing or eluding arrest with motor vehicle, misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor resist or delay an officer, misdemeanor reckless driving and two misdemeanor drug offenses.

Further details haven’t been released. An investigation of the incident is active and ongoing. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools directed any questions to the police department.
