Charlotte makes top 10 for most mosquitoes in the U.S.

There are a lot of bloodsuckers flying around the Queen City.

That’s according to a new list of the worst cities in the United States for mosquitoes, which was released on Monday by pest control company Orkin.

Charlotte moved up to the 10th spot on the 2023 list. Not to be left behind, the Raleigh-Durham metro area also landed on the list at number 11. The ranking is based on how many calls for mosquito control services Orkin got from April 2022 through March of this year.

Los Angeles was named the worst city in the country for mosquitoes, and it’s actually the third time for the Southern California city to take the dubious honor. Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Dallas/Fort Worth rounded out the top five.

According to Orkin, warm weather and rainfall can lead to the best conditions for mosquitoes to reproduce rapidly, and Charlotte has no shortage of warm but rainy summer days.

Breeding season can start in May and last through September, but some places can see mosquitoes all year.
