Charlotte grand jury indicts two for homicide that ended in Lee County

A Charlotte County grand jury has indicted two for a homicide that crossed county lines.

State Attorney Amira Fox announced Thursday afternoon that Andrew Smith, 32, and Melissa Dymond-Demetrowitz, 24, both of Port Charlotte, were indicted in the fatal shooting of Shawn Patrick Armstrong, as well as for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder with a firearm and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Fox called it a "multilayered," "multijurisdictional" investigation.

According to the grand jury indictment returned Thursday, between Sept. 8, 2022, and Sept. 13, 2022, Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz conspired to murder Armstrong, Fox said.

Smith purchased a firearm just before the murder, and the victim was lured to a wooded area and murdered in southern Charlotte County, Fox said.

His body was put into his own vehicle, Fox said. Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz then drove Armstrong's pickup to Lee County, concealing the body.

Law enforcement later stopped them as they drove the pickup after they dropped the body, Fox said.

Punta Gorda Police and the Lee County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.

Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz remain at the Charlotte County Jail without bond.
