Charlotte 49ers to celebrate 50th anniversary with first athletics hall of fame class

The Charlotte 49ers are creating the institution’s first athletics hall of fame, which will be part of the school’s celebration of 50 years of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics during the 2020-21 season.

Some of the names who might be nominated include: Henry Williams and Cedric Maxwell, men’s basketball; Jon Busch, men’s soccer; Paula Bennett, women’s basketball; Corey Nagy, men’s golf; Shareese Woods, women’s track and field; and athletics directors and coaches Jeff Mullins and Judy Rose.

The 49ers announced Thursday they are accepting nominations for the first class, which will include a maximum of six athletes, two coaches/administrators and one key contributor. Future classes will include a maximum of five inductees.

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

A period of no less than five years must have have elapsed since completion of the athlete’s final season and he/she must have earned a varsity letter and left UNC Charlotte in good academic standing. That means the athlete’s final season must have been on or before the 2014-15 season.

Coaching and administrator nominees must have ended his/her professional relationship with UNCC in good standing.

An individual must have brought distinction to the athletic program.

Active coaches and administrators aren’t eligible.

Nominations are open to the public and due by April 22.
