Charlize Theron recounts embarrassing audition for her idol, Tom Hanks

On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Charlize Theron relived the humiliating audition she did for her idol, Tom Hanks, for his 1996 film, That Thing You Do!

“Oh, it was not good,” Theron told Colbert.I don’t know why he gave me the role. I mean, honestly, I was so nervous. … Imagine, you are 19 and you meet this idol, like I idolized him.” She said she watched a lot of Hanks’s films while growing up in South Africa and has seen Turner & Hooch “like 500 times.”

Theron wasn’t an Oscar-winning actress when she auditioned, so the nerves really got to her. “To audition for somebody like that is frightening,” Theron recalled. “The character who plays my boyfriend in the movie, his name is Guy. And I got so nervous in the audition. I had to do this scene with, Tom read with me. Oh, it’s so mortifying.” Theron went on to share that, no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t say “Guy.”

“I got so nervous that I couldn’t say ‘Guy’ and I kept saying ‘gay.’ And the more I tried to correct myself, the more I just said ‘gay,’ and it was so horrible. He literally said at one point, he’s like, ‘You know, let’s just take a break, we’ll come back.’ And I was, like, ‘Oh, I am sucking right now!'”

While it does sound pretty embarrassing, Theron got the part, as we all know, and now it’s all just that thing she remembers.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
