Dylann Roof, the avowed white supremacist who killed nine people in a shooting rampage at the historically black Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015, has been sentenced to death. The same jury that convicted Roof on 33 counts after just two hours of deliberation last month decided his fate today, NBC News reports.

The 22-year-old represented himself during sentencing proceedings, and seemed determined to convince the jury to come to this outcome. He presented no witnesses or evidence, blocked former and stand-by defense lawyers' attempts to call his mental health into question, and refused to express remorse.

"I do not regret what I did," Roof wrote in a jailhouse journal, "I am not sorry."

He will be the 63rd person ever placed on federal death row, according to NBC News, the first since Boston bomber Dzhokar Tsarnaev. He will likely be there for years before he is put to death. He also faces a second trial by the state of South Carolina, the date of which has not been determined, in which he also faces the death penalty.
