Charges filed in fatal crash near New Paris

GOSHEN — Charges have been filed against a Bargersville man accused of causing the death of his passenger in a high-speed rollover crash earlier this year.

Lakhwinder Singh, 23, faces two counts of causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a Level 4 felony, in court documents filed Tuesday. One count alleges that he had an alcohol concentration equivalent of at least .08 at the time.

The Feb. 13 crash near New Paris killed 23-year-old Prabhjot Singh.

Police say Lakhwinder Singh was driving a 2020 Toyota Camry northbound on S.R. 15, north of C.R. 142, when he left the roadway. The Camry was approaching a curve when it ran off the east side of the road and rolled several times.

Data from the airbag control module showed that the vehicle was traveling 124 mph when it left the roadway, according to police.

Officers with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office arrived at around 7:39 p.m. and found the vehicle in a field. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt and Prabhjot Singh had been ejected from the vehicle.

He was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend with incapacitating injuries. He later died of his injuries.

Lakhwinder Singh was transported to Elkhart General Hospital to be treated for head, neck and back injuries. He submitted to a blood draw, which indicated his blood-alcohol concentration was 0.217g/100mL, according to police.
