Charges dropped against woman accused of abusing elderly mother

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Prosecutors have dropped the charges against one of two sisters accused of abusing their elderly mother by physically stopping her from receiving medical treatment for an infection.

Ida Newby was set to go to trial Monday morning on elder abuse charges, but Judge Todd Derrick unexpectedly dismissed the case on Wednesday, March 6. The dismissal came on the same day Newby’s attorneys were set to meet with Judge Derrick to give an update on their case.

Houston County Prosecutors have yet to give a reason why Newby’s charges were dismissed.

The 45-year-old defendant was charged alongside her sister, 44-year-old Annie Newby.

The sisters were initially arrested in January 2020 after Dothan Police said they stopped their mother from receiving medical treatment, even physically pulling her wheelchair from an ambulance as medical workers were trying to take the elderly victim to a doctor’s appointment.

The sisters were arrested again in May 2023 after Judge Derrick claimed they missed a court hearing and issued fugitive warrants.

Annie Newby is held in the Houston County Jail with no bond. Her trial is expected to start next month.
