Chapin boys beat Colleyville Heritage, advance to second straight Elite 8

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KTSM) – The Chapin High School boys basketball team grabbed a 48-41 win over Colleyville Heritage in the Class 5A Regional Semifinal (Sweet 16) at Kay Yeager Coliseum on Friday. With the win, Chapin punched its ticket to the Class 5A Regional Final (Elite 8) of the UIL Texas Boys State Basketball Playoffs.

This is the second year in a row Chapin, ranked fourth in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Class 5A Top 25 poll, will advance to the Elite 8 round of the playoffs.

Chapin doesn’t have too much time to celebrate as the Huskies are back in business Saturday. No. 4 Chapin will turn around and face No. 5 Amarillo in Class 5A Regional Final at noon Mountain Time on Saturday at Kay Yeager Coliseum.

Winner advances to the Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.

Brandon Hymes led Chapin in scoring as he recorded 17 points. Thirteen of Hymes’ points came after halftime.

Game was neck and neck to start out as Chapin held a 6-5 lead over Colleyville Heritage after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Chapin jumped out with a run to take a 15-9 lead. Colleyville Heritage battled back to cut its deficit down to one point, 20-19, by the time halftime rolled around.

In the second half, Chapin gained momentum from a Mudia Gbowa made three-pointer and Brandon Hymes steal and slam that put the Huskies up 27-21 with 3:58 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Colleyville Heritage rallied back at tied the game at 34. Chapin responded with an 8-1 run to take a 42-35 lead with 1:55 left in the contest.

Chapin held off a rallying Colleyville Heritage team and secured a 48-41 win.

No. 4 Chapin and No. 5 Amarillo will go head-to-head in the Class 5A Regional Final (Elite 8) on Saturday. Tipoff is at 12 p.m. MT/1 p.m. CT at Kay Yeager Coliseum.
