Chanute apartment fire now investigated as fatal

CHANUTE, Kan. — According to Sedgwick County Fire District 1, investigators with the ATF, along with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office called in the department’s Accelerant Detection Canine Team to help with the scene examination of the fatal fire.

This video was sent in by Sandy Heffernon, showing the west side units of the Cornerstone Apartment Complex completely consumed by flames.

The fire began around 1:20 this morning and residents of that section of the complex were evacuated.

All 24 units of the complex were occupied, the Chanute Fire Department said, and confirmed one fatality and multiple injuries.

American Red Cross disaster workers are providing meals, snacks, and water for displaced residents, as well as first responders. The evacuation site is at the Chanute City Park Pavilion.

The Chanute animal shelter is also working to reunite lost pets with their owners.

Fire officials say Parsons, Iola, and Thayer all sent assistance.

We have a crew at the scene who will have more updates as they become available.
