Championship rivalry: 3 NCAA hockey titles for Webster siblings

DENVER (KDVR) — For the Webster family, a sibling rivalry has bloomed into a championship mentality.

The University of Denver hockey team and captain McKade Webster will begin their quest for a title this weekend as the NCAA men’s hockey tournament will drop the puck in Springfield, Massachusetts.

“Our group has been unbelievable down the stretch here,” said McKade, who was on the 2021-22 championship DU team. “We’ve been in playoff mode the last eight weeks, and I’m really confident on what this team can achieve.”

Meanwhile, McKade’s sister Makenna struck gold this weekend as the Ohio State women’s hockey team topped Wisconsin in the title game. She won her first title with Wisconsin in 2021 and was named the Frozen Four’s most outstanding player.

“She has a leg up on me,” McKade said of his younger sister, who also plays on the Ohio State field hockey team. “I’m so proud of her. She knows what it takes and what it’s about.”

Denver will begin their title run as a number one seed in their region after earning an automatic bid to the national tournament by claiming the National Collegiate Hockey Conference championship this past weekend. McKade was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

“Everyone’s bought in right now,” McKade told “Colorado Sports Night” before the Pioneers traveled to Springfield. “We’re playing for each other and it’s fun to watch.”

The Pioneers will begin the 2024 NCAA tournament on Thursday against the University of Massachusetts at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Springfield. Game time is noon MT at MassMutual Center on Thursday.
