Champaign-Urbana bike groups honoring riders hurt, killed on roads

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — An international biking event is taking place Wednesday evening that will include a trio of Champaign-Urbana biking groups.

The Ride of Silence is a memorial event that honors bicyclists who are hurt or killed while riding on public roadways. It is a slow-paced bike ride that, in Champaign-Urbana, will take place across eight miles of roadway.

Members from Champaign County Bikes, Prairie Cycle Club and C-U Safe Routes to School will be taking part.

“Our goal is to raise awareness among motorists, the public, and decision makers of the dangers cyclists and pedestrians face on the roads, especially from other traffic,” said Sue Jones, President of the Prairie Cycle Club. “It causes onlookers and motorists to pause and become conscience of the rights cyclists have to share the road and recognize cyclists and pedestrians
themselves.”

This year’s Ride of Silence will start at 7 p.m. with a start/finish line at the I-Hotel on the University of Illinois Campus. Everyone is welcome to take part.
