Champaign students making slime for a cause

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Children in one Champaign school are using a slimy recipe to raise money.

Judah Christian School students are paying homage to one of their own while raising money for her cause. Nine-year-old Calla Woods started selling homemade slime to support children in Romania, but she died of brain cancer before she could see her vision come true. Now, the school is using its International Missions Week to keep the “Look Out for the Left Out” event going.

Calla’s family continues to honor her mission and fundraise by selling slime, hosting school assemblies, and teaching students how to make Calla’s slime recipe themselves.

“It’s hugely impactful. We are in a bubble. We’re in a little area right here. It’s safe. It’s comfortable. It’s known,” Judah Christian Music Director Christa Kennedy said. “We understand it, we have safe places to be — and [it’s important] for students to understand that not everybody in the world has that safe space.”

The goal is usually $1,000. This year, if they reach the $2,000 bonus goal, a teacher will get covered in slime at the end of the week. So far, they have nearly $500 and all proceeds go towards Romania.
