Champaign Police: Have a burglary alarm? Register it

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is reminding home and business owners with burglary alarms to register them with the city, as required by city code.

Alarm systems or equipment that is designed to provide an audible, mechanical or electrical signal of a disturbance, are required to have a permit and be registered with the City of Champaign, with renewal letters sent every year. The city works with a third party vendor — PMAM Corporation — to manage permits and false alarm tracking.

Officials said false alarms make up 3.5% of the CPD’s total service calls, and they can be costly and hazardous to the city. Thy can divert police away from proactive crime prevention efforts and delay responses to actual emergencies.

People can register or reregister their alarms online, by calling 888-408-9026 or mailing a check to the City of Champaign Alarm Program at P.O. Box 142375 in Irving, Texas, 75014.
