Champaign man arrested after allegedly threatening traffic with air rifle

Apr. 22—CHAMPAIGN — The intersection of Neil Street and Bradley Avenue was temporarily closed Saturday while a Champaign man armed with an air rifle allegedly made threatening gestures at passing traffic.

Champaign police were dispatched to the intersection at 4:18 p.m. for a report of an armed subject, Deputy Chief of Operations Kevin Olmstead said.

On scene, officers located McKenzie Davis, 28, who was allegedly brandishing what appeared to be a rifle. Officers commanded Davis to put the weapon down and his hands up. Davis complied and was taken into custody without further incident. The intersection was closed during the initial police response but reopened after Davis was taken into custody.

Police determined the rifle was an air rifle, not an actual firearm. Its safety markers had been removed, making it appear more real.

Davis was then transported to the Champaign County Correctional Facility on preliminary charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.
