Champaign Co. YMCA swim team wins state championship

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County YMCA heat swim team is celebrating its biggest win in over 30 years.

78 kids competed in the YMCA swimming state finals over the weekend. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams were able to get the job done and take first place in the 2024 Illinois YMCA State Championship.

“Getting kids to be a part of the program, learn how to be competitive, learn how to enjoy each other, make friends,” said head coach Will Barker. “Be great teammates, be responsible and that good feeling just grows, and more and more kids want to be a part of it.”

Barker said as of right now, 15 kids have qualified to compete at nationals. That will be in Greensboro, N.C. the first week of April.
