Champaign City Council looking to fill vacancy

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign City Council is finalizing a process to fill the vacancy on their city council.

Daniel Iniguez, who represented district 3 on the Champaign City Council, resigned Tuesday. The other members of the Champaign City Council are set to discuss the process at the next study session on May 21, according to an agenda published online.

The city council has proposed an expedited schedule to fill the vacancy by the June 18 meeting. This includes having applications due to the city clerk at noon on June 3, and interviewing candidates on the June 11 study session.

In order to be considered for the appointment, the applicant must be a resident of District 3. The application to fill out also asks for a candidate’s voter registration, awards and recognition and community involvement, along with questions to like “What are some of your long-range objectives for the City of Champaign?” and “What in your qualifications or background make you the right person for this appointment?”

The appointment will be until May 2025.

The last time the city council had to appoint a council member was in 2016.
