Champaign assistant principal going to Urbana School District

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The assistant principal of Garden Hills Academy in Champaign is moving over to the Urbana School District as their Special Education Administrator.

Jacquelyn Douglas will take over her new position on July 23. The Urbana Board of Education approved the appointment at their Tuesday meeting.

Vacant Champaign School Board seats to be filled by end of next week

Douglas was appointed as Garden Hills’ Assistant Principal in 2022. In addition to these duties, she also served as the school’s social worker.

In 2009, Douglas began as the READY Program’s behavior intervention specialist in Champaign. Officials with the Urbana School District say she has gained expertise in special education services, culturally responsive teaching, and trauma-informed practices, making her an ideal fit for the Special Education Administrator role.

This will not be Douglas’ first time working with the students of Urbana, however. She has also coached Urbana Middle School’s volleyball and track & field teams.

Her exceptional work in education recently earned Douglas the Illinois State Board of Education Meritorious Award. She is also a Central Illinois Business 40 under 40 recipient.
