The final day of the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships came and went with a Centre County wrestler securing a gold medal.

State College 160-pounder Asher Cunningham won the first state gold medal of his high school career. The junior defeated Central Dauphin’s Ryan Garvick by decision, 2-0, after earning a reversal in the third period to secure the match’s only points.

Here’s a look at how every Centre County wrestler fared at states:

STATE COLLEGE

Team score: 3rd, 71.5 points

Medalists: Pierson Manville (2nd, 145 pounds); Asher Cunningham (1st, 160); Nick Pavlechko (3rd, 285)

Eliminated: Noah Young (1-2, 107 pounds, Friday); James Whitbred (0-2, 133, Thursday)

Recap: The Little Lions will be heading home from Hershey with a state champion after Cunningham took home the title at 160 pounds with a win over Ryan Garvick.

Cunningham, who entered the bout with only one loss this season, secured a 2-0 decision over Garvick thanks to a second-period rideout and a third-period reversal that resulted in the match’s only points.

The Little Lions also had Manville make the title match, but he fell to Central Mountain’s Luke Simcox by a 4-1 decision after tiebreakers. Manville was unable to ride Simcox out in the second tiebreak and gave up a late takedown to his opponent after he tried to score late.

Pavlechko took home his third-place finish by earning a 3-1 decision win over Spring Grove’s Michael Hershey. He took Hershey down in the third period after the two heavyweights exchanged escapes to begin the second and third periods. He earned bonus points for State High earlier in the day when he won by major decision over St. Joseph’s Prep’s Maxwell Roy in the consolation semifinals to earn his matchup with Hershey.

Thursday’s Recap: A year ago, the Little Lions had two in the finals with Manville and Pavlechko.

This year, Manville made it back for the third straight season, but this time it was Cunningham along for the finals ride.

Manville pinned Quakertown’s Gavin Carroll in 1 minute, 17 seconds to make the semifinals. He continued his dominance there by racking up a 17-2 technical fall on Central York’s Elias Long in 4:18.

Manville will face a District 6 foe in Central Mountain’s Luke Simcox on Saturday afternoon.

“Pierson had a heck of a match. He went right after him (Long). He’s looking really good,” State College coach Ryan Cummins said. “He is definitely on his game. Hopefully, he keeps that rolling right into the finals.”

Cunningham is making his first finals appearance after finishing fourth last year.

He was in a tight one with Wallenpaupack’s Gunnar Myers before pinning Myers in 5:20. In the semifinals, Cunningham scored seven unanswered points for a 7-1 win over Thomas Jefferson’s Bode Marlow.

The Penn State commit faces Central Dauphin’s Ryan Garvick in the finals.

“He tries to give me heart attacks all the time. His style is just that way. I have to get used to it, I guess,” Cummins said. “He was still scoring points, but he gets them a different way. He’s wrestling with confidence, so I’m happy about that.”

State College’s Nicholas Pavlechko faces Owen J. Roberts’ Dean Bechtold in the 285-pound PIAA Class 3A semifinal match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey.
State College’s Nicholas Pavlechko faces Owen J. Roberts’ Dean Bechtold in the 285-pound PIAA Class 3A semifinal match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Pavlechko was in the semifinals, too, thanks to a 9-2 win over Twin Valley’s Ean Winchester.

In the semifinals, Pavlechko trailed 1-0 to Owen J. Roberts’ Dean Bechtold after two periods. The Indiana commit elected to start on his feet, which came back to bite him. Pavlechko didn’t get the winning score and fell into the consolation bracket.

“He wanted neutral. He was confident that he could take him down,” Cummins said. “He just never really got his offense going like we know he can. I’m hoping that he’ll bounce back here with confidence in the consolations.”

Young had only one match on the day.

He was leading 4-2 after two periods of wrestling against Peters Township’s Nicholas McGarrity. However, McGarrity put Young to his back midway through the third period and pinned him in 4:59 to end Young’s season.

A great season of experience for him. He came miles and learned a ton,” Cummins said. “He got himself down to 107 where we thought he belonged. He just got better and better there. It’s going to benefit him in the future.”

Thursday’s action

The Little Lions had ups and downs on the first day.

Their freshmen in Young and Whitbred got their first taste of the Giant Center. The veterans in Manville, Cunningham and Pavlechko went to work.

“Yeah, it was a good day. Of course, you always want to get those wins, but most of the matches went pretty well. Our guys wrestled well,” State College coach Ryan Cummins said.

Manville and Pavlechko are aiming to get back to the finals again after suffering losses last year.

Manville dominated Nazareth’s Cade Campbell. He opened with three first period takedowns to hold a 6-2 lead. After tallying only one takedown in the second period, Manville went on the hunt in the third period to add two more in a 14-5 major decision.

Pavlechko started this year’s tournament like last year’s by taking on St. Joseph Prep’s Maxwell Roy. He seemed to make an even bigger gap on Roy after beating him 8-7 last year.

Pavlechko didn’t give up a single point to Roy on Thursday and earned the 11-0 major decision.

Cunningham played around with Hershey’s Christian Burd before putting him on his back in 1:23.

“Those three had nice matches. I think they wrestled really well. Pav wrestled much better this time, controlled everything and was smart about it,” Cummins said. “Pierson looked good. Asher looks like he’s on a mission.”

Young and Whitbred suffered losses in their openers, but only Young was able to bounce back.

Young grabbed a 3-0 lead on Penn Manor’s Caden Boland after two periods of wrestling, scoring all of his points in the second. Boland opened the third with a reversal, but gave up a penalty point and an easy escape to give Young a 5-2 win to remain alive.

“To be able to bounce back, definitely shows a lot of mental toughness. As a freshman, there is a maturity there that a lot of kids don’t have, so it was impressive,” Cummins said.

Whitbred had a coming out party this postseason winning a district and regional crown. However, the storybook season came to a close.

He led 1-0 after two periods of wrestling with Red Lion’s Mason Harvey. In the third period, Whitbred was called for an interlock giving Harvey a point. Whitbred wanted Harvey on his feet to try and get the winning takedown with just over a minute to go.

Instead it was Harvey earning the score with 30 seconds remaining, which gave him the 4-2 win over Whitbred.

“He had a great year. He really did for a freshman. He had an outstanding regional tournament,” Cummins said. “Just a couple things, he needs to clean up a little bit. He’s got some work to do, but we’re excited about his prospects for next year.”

Class 2A

Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close faces Southern Columbia’s Garrett Garcia in the 189-pound PIAA Class 2A semifinal match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

BALD EAGLE AREA

Team score: Tied 14th, 38 points

Medalists: Tanner Guenot (5th, 107 pounds); Caden Judice (7th, 114); Caleb Close (3rd,189)

Recap: The Eagles entered the day with three wrestlers fighting for podium position, and all three secured wins and maximized their spots.

Guenot got things going in the place matches with a fall in 2:47. His bout with Burrell’s Cam Baker began with a scoreless first period, but the action ramped up in the second. Guenot began the period on bottom, but earned a reversal that quickly turned into back points and a fall for Bald Eagle Area’s 107-pounder.

Judice followed his teammate’s performance up with an active match of his own en route to a 5-4 decision and a seventh-place finish. He and Saegertown’s Carter Beck went scoreless in the first, but picked things up in the second. Judice began the period on top, but gave up a reversal before escaping to close the period down 2-1.

He then earned a reversal of his own, before Beck reversed him back to go up 4-3 with only 30 seconds left in the match. Judice and Beck nearly went off the mat as they scrambled with the clock ticking down, but the Bald Eagle Area wrestler was able to collect his opponent’s hips and secure another reversal. He rode out Beck from there to earn the win.

Close earned a 7-1 decision in the consolation semifinals over Clearfield’s Carter Chamberlain to earn a spot in the third-place match, where he finished things off with relative ease, earning a 6-0 decision. An escape, takedown and three nearfall points — all in the second period — accounted for all of his scoring in the bout.

Friday’s Recap: All of the wrestlers the Eagles brought to Hershey are going home with PIAA medals.

Close made it the furthest in the championship bracket by reaching the semifinals.

He shut out Schuylkill Haven’s Augustus Warke, 7-0, to set up a match with Southern Columbia’s Garrett Garcia.

Close tallied the first points of the match by securing a takedown right before the buzzer in the first period. Garcia rode Close out for the entire second period to keep the score 2-0.

Midway through the third period, Garcia cut the deficit in half with an escape. He was called for multiple cautions to give Close a point and a 3-1 lead with five seconds left.

Close seemed to stop wrestling at the edge of the mat and Garcia tied it with a takedown at the buzzer. In the sudden victory period, Garcia took advantage of a counter shot to beat Close, 5-3.

“Sometimes things happen that you just don’t really expect or think is possible. It is a crazy sport. Things happen in this place that you never know what’s going to happen in Hershey,” BEA coach Ron Guenot said. “You have to wrestle every second while you’re here. It’s one of those things that didn’t go our way there in the end.”

Bald Eagle Area’s Tanner Guenot controls Montoursville’s Aristotlis Bobotas in their 107-pound PIAA Class 2A consolation third round match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey. Guenot edged Bobotas, 3-2, to earn a spot on the podium.

Guenot and Judice fell into the consolation bracket with quarterfinals losses. They battled their way through the blood round and secured their first PIAA medals.

Guenot topped Montoursville’s Aristotlis Bobotas, 3-2, to secure his podium spot. He then began to climb the podium as he earned a 4-1 win over Tussey Mountain’s Dakota Santamaria to reach the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning.

“He looked good and solid. He put a nice ride together (against Santamaria). I know what he is capable of and that’s what he did,” Ron Guenot said. “The last match looked like Tanner, more than any match here so far. It’s a good sign.”

Bald Eagle Area’s Caden Judice scrambles with Conwell-Egan’s Kevin Bagnell in their 114-pound PIAA Class 2A consolation third round match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey. Judice defeated Bagnell, 6-4, to secure his first PIAA medal.

Judice used a takedown with 12 seconds left in the third period to top Conwell-Egan’s Kevin Bagnell to secure his podium spot.

However, he suffered a 10-2 loss to Chestnut Ridge’s Easton Mull, which limits Judice’s finish to no higher than seventh.

“It’s a learning experience for him. Pennsylvania wrestling is very competitive,” Ron Guenot said. “He’s going to be on the podium, but he gets one more match. He has a chance to go out with a win for the season.”

Thursday’s action

The Eagles brought three wrestlers, and all of them moved into the quarterfinals.

“Three for three, that was the goal obviously. The kids came through,” BEA coach Ron Guenot said. “Anytime you win down here and move on, that’s a success. You put yourself in a better position and get ready for the next day. Now, they can relax and make sure their weight is good and get ready to go for tomorrow.”

Close, who is the lone Eagles wrestler with PIAAs experience, came away with the only bonus point victory. He racked up a 10-0 lead on Montgomery’s Coy Bryson, before flattening him in 3 minutes, 1 second.

“He’s able to focus more on wrestling as far as improving. He doesn’t need to watch his weight like he did last year,” Ron Guenot said. “I think that’s made a big difference.”

Tanner Guenot and Judice each earned their stripes in their first matches inside the Giant Center as individuals.

Guenot used a first-period takedown to hold up in a 2-0 win over Cranberry’s Aiden Thompson. The pair traded rideouts over the final two periods.

Judice came out scoring at will against Saegertown’s Carter Beck to hold a 6-1 lead after one period. In the second period, Beck put Judice on his back for near-fall points, but Judice picked up a reversal to lead 8-4. In the end, Judice came away with a 9-6 win.

“Sometimes you have to wrestle what’s given. You have to be strong in all three phases of the game. That’s kind what happened with Tanner there,” Ron Guenot said. “He put a ride together in the third period to get the W. Caden kept wrestling and didn’t stop, so I think that’s the key for those guys.”

Penns Valley’s Ty Watson controls Sharpsville’s Caullin Summers in their 152-pound PIAA Class 2A consolation third round match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey. Watson topped Summers, 7-3, to earn his third straight PIAA medal.

PENNS VALLEY

Team score: 37th, 16 points

Medalists: Ty Watson (8th, 152 pounds)

Eliminated: Erik Carlile (1-2, 114 pounds); Colten Shunk (1-2, 133); Ethan Fetterolf (1-2, 160)

Recap: Watson was unable to close out his third state tournament appearance with a win, falling in the seventh-place match. He took on Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover in what was a close bout.

Neither wrestler was able to score in the first period, but Watson got on board first with his escape after beginning the second period on bottom. Hoover was able to secure a takedown from there, with Watson escaping to tie it back up at 2-2.

However, Hoover was able to escape after beginning the third period on bottom and closed out the scoring in his 3-2 victory.

Friday’s Recap: According to coach Joel Brinker, Watson became just the second Rams wrestler ever to be a three-time PIAA placer. He joined former teammate Malachi DuVall in that honor.

After losing his first match of the tournament, Watson showed grit by winning three straight matches to secure his podium spot. He earned two of those wins on Friday.

The Penn State commit began by racking up a 14-1 major decision on Burgettstown’s Rudy Brown. Watson then secured his podium finish by topping Sharpsville’s Caullin Summers, 7-3.

Watson then suffered a 4-2 loss to Clearfield’s Brady Collins to put him in the seventh-place match Saturday.

“Ty is a three-time state placer; that weight is a pretty brutal down here,” Brinker said. “ You could wrestle that every weekend, and the chips will fall at different places. I know it stings now, but he’s going to look back and be proud that he came back through and placed.”

Shunk suffered back-to-back losses to see his high school career come to a close.

After making the quarterfinals, he had no answer for Bishop McDevitt’s Camden Baum in an 18-4 loss. Shunk ran into a buzzsaw in North East’s Cyrus Hurd in the consolation bracket.

Hurd scored at will in a 16-1 technical fall in 3:31.

Carlile and Fetterolf each only had one match on the day.

Carlile suffered a heartbreaking 5-3 loss in sudden victory to Big Spring’s Keegan Barrick. Fetterolf was stuck by Frazier’s Ryan Celaschi in 41 seconds.

Thursday’s action

The Rams entered the championships with the most qualifiers for Centre County’s schools.

On paper, it looked as if they’d get at least two to the quarterfinals. But, in the end, only Shunk got there. Coach Joel Brinker was still pleased to have all four around for Day 2 on Friday.

“If you’re making the second day, you’re still in contention for a medal,” he said with a laugh.

Shunk had just one match on the day, but he made it count and nearly wrestled an equivalent of a second match.

He faced off with Warrior Run’s Max Wirnsberger, who finished seventh last year. The pair traded escapes in regulation, but no one was able to score in sudden victory. They traded escapes again in the rideout periods to force an ultimate tiebreaker.

Wirnsberger choose top, and Shunk made him pay for it with an escape and a 3-2 victory.

“Colten wrestled a smart match against a very good opponent. Brother (Baylor) really helped scout him out and had a game plan for him,” Brinker said. “Colten doesn’t beat himself. He limits any mistakes. If you’re going to beat him, you’re going to have to beat him.”

Carlile, Watson and Fetterolf all suffered losses in their first bouts of the day. However, they each were able to bounce back to remain alive for a medal.

The freshman in Carlile racked up an 8-0 major decision on Athens’ Mason Vanderpool. Watson built up a 10-0 lead on Western Wayne’s Tyler Barletta before putting him on his back in 1:58.

Fetterolf recorded the first points of his match against General McLane’s Hudson Spires. He led 5-3 after the second period.

Spires was in on a deep shot late in the third period, trailing 5-4, but Fetterolf hung on for dear life and the 5-4 win.

“Eric had a good bounce-back match here and did a nice job. I know Ty didn’t come here for where he’s at, but he just needs to readjust his goals,” Brinker said. “There’s a path to a medal, and however far he wants to go is up to him. For Ethan, getting a win here is pretty special. All four guys are returning tomorrow, so it’s pretty nice.”

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Marcus Gable controls Cranberry’s Dane Wenner in their 139-pound PIAA Class 2A consolation third round match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey. Gable beat Wenner, 5-1, to secure his first PIAA medal.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA

Team score: Tied 49th, 10 points

Medalists: Marcus Gable (7th, 139 pounds)

Eliminated: Caleb Hummel (2-2, 107 pounds)

Recap: It was a relatively quiet Saturday for Philipsburg-Osceola — but it was still a successful one. Gable took seventh place at 139 pounds after a quality win over Camp Hill’s Noah Doi.

A scoreless first period led to a 3-0 second after Gable took the bottom, escaped and secured a takedown. He rode out Doi in the third period, tacking on four more points and earning the victory.

The win gives Gable 120 all-time wins at P-O, extending his lead as the school’s all-time leader after breaking the previous mark Friday.

Friday’s Recap: The 2024 PIAA Championships became the second time that Gable made it to Hershey.

He went as a freshman and didn’t place. Now, in his final go-round, he was able to get his first PIAA medal, but also set some history along the way.

Coming into Friday’s action, Gable was tied with Nate Rupp for the Mounties’ all-time wins mark at 117. When he beat Wyomissing’s Marvin Armistead, 6-1, Gable became the all-time leader at 118.

The next round saw Gable add to that mark as he earned a hard fought 5-1 win over Cranberry’s Dane Wenner to achieve his ultimate goal of a state medal. His day didn’t end as he would’ve hoped with a 5-4 loss to Burrell’s Cooper Hornack.

“It’s really special for Marcus because I’ve had him for three years and I know the amount of work he is putting in,” P-O coach Justin Fye said. “To see it all pay off with that win this morning in the blood round and see the excitement on his face, it was worthwhile to see that happen. He has really dedicated himself this year. I’m super proud of him.”

Earlier in the day, the Mounties saw Hummel come up a round shy of being on the podium.

He opened his day by using a late reversal in the third period to top Quaker Valley’s Bruce Anderchak, 2-1. In the consolation third round, Hummel was unable to get his offense going in a 5-2 loss to Northern Lebanon’s Sam Wolford.

Thursday’s action

It was a rollercoaster day for the Mounties.

It started out with a loss, but ended with a pair of wins — and with both wrestlers still competing.

“We’ve talked all about, you can’t be on podiums unless you get to the next day of a tournament, so we’re working in the right direction,” P-O coach Justin Fye said.

Both Gable and Hummel started in the first round, but only Gable was able to make the second round. He put in some extra work with an 8-6 victory in sudden victory. He trailed 6-4 after giving up near-fall points late in the third period, but he was able to tally a reversal to force sudden victory.

Gable picked up the winning takedown with one second remaining.

He nearly pulled off an upset of the No. 1 seed in Faith Christian’s Mason Wagner, but fell 3-2, in the second round.

“Marcus had a good match,” Fye said. “His first time wrestling down here, he did a good job getting the takedown in overtime. We were a couple of seconds away from maybe winning that match. It’s a reminder for him coming in to tomorrow. There’s good kids at his weight class with him. He’s got to maintain his focus.”

Hummel suffered a tough 6-4 loss to Trinity’s Jordan Manyette to get his day started. However, he was able to rebound, but it came with some suspense.

Hummel was leading Cranberry’s Aiden Thompson late in the third period, but Thompson picked up a reversal with two seconds remaining to force overtime. Hummel tallied the winning takedown 18 seconds into the period for the 4-2 win to remain alive in the consolation bracket.

“I thought we were looking to possibly win the first match to start the day. It almost looked like we weren’t ready to wrestle in the first period. After that first period, we wrestled great,” Fye said of Hummel. “To come back and get a win here was great. We were controlling the whole match. We gave up that reversal at the end, and just got in a position where we maybe panicked a little bit. He did a good job to score in overtime.”

Bellefonte’s Ezra Swisher looks for an opening on Line Mountain’s Nolan Baumert in their 139-pound PIAA Class 2A consolation first round match on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey. Baumert ended Swisher’s season with a 3-2 loss.

BELLEFONTE

Team score: Tied 104th, 0 points

Eliminated: Ezra Swisher (0-2, 139 pounds)

Thursday’s action

The Red Raiders didn’t pull off any pleasant surprises Thursday.

They brought just one wrestler in Swisher, and their time at the PIAA Championships was cut short. The sophomore started the day off with a first-round match against Mid Valley’s Matthew Almedina, who came away with a 6-2 victory.

Swisher was dropped into the consolation bracket, where he suffered a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Line Mountain’s Nolan Baumert.

“It’s one thing to get down here and get the environment and see what the next level is like. Guys are big and strong. It’s a learning experience for sure,” Bellefonte coach Mike Maney said. “One of the things that Ezra has to work on is starting faster. He has a good engine and good conditioning. He just needs to start his matches at a little bit of a higher pace.”

Girls

Bald Eagle Area’s Grace Crestani controls Pottstown’s Vida Torres in their 190-pound PIAA girls consolation second round match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey. Crestani pinned Torres in 2:00 to become the Lady Eagles’ first PIAA medalist.

BALD EAGLE AREA

Team score: Tied 56th, 11 points

Medalists: Grace Crestani (8th, 190 pounds)

Eliminated: Eden Eveleth (0-2, 106 pounds); Angie Grieb (1-2, 148)

Recap: Crestani finished in eighth place after falling to Central Dauphin’s Aaliyah Armstrong.

Armstrong took Crestani down to her back in the first period, but couldn’t secure the fall.

She began the second period on top and was able to finish the job 59 seconds into the period to defeat the Bald Eagle Area medalist.

Friday’s Recap: Crestani has been to the state tournament now three straight years.

She wasn’t able to get on the podium the first two attempts, but she made it count the most when it was an official PIAA tournament.

After being pinned in the quarterfinals by Canon-McMillan’s Natalie Rush, Crestani bounced back with a pin of her own.

She stuck Pottstown’s Vida Torres in 2:00 to secure the first PIAA medal for the Lady Eagles. Crestani then suffered a 2-0 loss to Palisades’ Bryce Snyder, which put her in the seventh-place match Saturday morning.

“We moved her up a weight class because we knew 170 pounds in our region was brutal. We made an executive decision and talked to her,” BEA coach Eddie Hockenberry said. “She plays football, so we knew the weight wouldn’t be much of an issue. Her style of wrestling needed to change a little bit. We worked on some things. She followed through with the plan, and there she is.”

Thursday’s action

The Lady Eagles had the most state qualifiers with their trio of wrestlers.

Crestani and Grieb have had experience in a state tournament before as they each competed in last year’s MyHouse Girls State Championships.

Crestani came away as the lone winner into the quarterfinals.

She raced out to a 10-1 lead after two periods of wrestling against North Penn’s Daniella Maxwell. Crestani put Maxwell on her back early in the third period for a pin in 4:41.

“I thought it was going to be hard, and it definitely is. There is not going to be an easy match here,” Crestani said. “I know it’s going to get harder as I move on, but getting that first win under the belt definitely will make it easier.”

Eveleth and Grieb didn’t have as much success as their teammate.

Eveleth was shut out by Garnet Valley’s Reese Dewar, 7-0. Grieb, who finished fourth last year, suffered a 16-1 technical fall loss to Northwestern Lehigh’s Katie Brensinger.

“You always try to go three for three, but this is Pennsylvania states and it’s pretty competitive. We wrestled two quality opponents. Sometimes you just don’t get the breaks,” BEA coach Eddie Hockenberry said. “I’ve noticed in girls wrestling the first takedown changes the momentum of a match real quick. We got some work to do, got to stay focused and get ready for the next round (Friday).”

Cumberland Valley’s’ Eliana White-Vega controls Philipsburg-Osceola’s Isabella Duvall in the 124-pound PIAA girls semifinal match on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the Giant Center in Hershey.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA

Team score: Tied 50th, 14 points

Medalists: Isabella DuVall (3rd, 124 pounds)

Recap: DuVall rebounded nicely from her semifinal loss Friday night to finish third at 124 pounds.

She opened Saturday morning with a 6-2 win over Greenville’s Kelly Enterline, before taking on Plum’s Saphia Davis in the consolation finals.

DuVall earned a takedown in the first period of her bout with Davis, and tacked on another in the second to make it 4-1. She began the third period on top and fought for nearfall points, but was unable to secure any, closing out her decision win and third-place finish.

Friday’s Recap: DuVall became the first girl in Centre County history to secure a PIAA medal by reaching the semifinals.

She earned a takedown with six seconds remaining in the first period of her quarterfinals match with Pen Argyl’s Madacyn Rivera. The pair were not able to score the rest of the match, which sent DuVall to the semifinals with a 2-0 win.

In the semifinals, she was taken down seven seconds into the first period against Cumberland Valley’s Eliana White-Vega. White-Vega went on to pin DuVall in 1:47.

“Over the last three years, we’ve wrestled White-Vega twice now. We got her last year in the quarterfinals at states. It was the first time that Bella gave up bonus points to anyone,” Lady Mounties’ coach Chris McCully said. “At Bald Eagle in the finals, she took it to us again. We knew it was going to be a dog fight. We didn’t win, but it is what it is. She’s in good spirits. She’s really excited to get back on the mat (Saturday). We still have work to do.”

DuVall was in her second state championships as she competed in last year’s MyHouse Girls State Championships. She came away with a sixth-place finish last year.

This year, DuVall started off in the right direction. She gave up the first points of the bout as Greenville’s Kelly Enterline took her down seven seconds in. DuVall quickly escaped and got a takedown of her own.

Enterline tied the bout back up before the end of the first period. DuVall tacked on a takedown in the second period to lead 5-4. In the third period, DuVall opened with an escape, but Enterline tied the bout again, 6-6, with her second takedown.

DuVall recorded the winning point with an escape at six seconds left on the clock.

“It feels great. I did not want to lose. I did not want to go into overtime,” DuVall said.

STATE COLLEGE

Team score: Tied 82nd, 3 points

Medalists: None

Eliminated: Anna Lackey (1-2, 106 pounds)

Friday’s Recap: Lackey was able to keep her tournament alive, at least for a while, after dropping into the consolations.

She opened her second day by pinning North Hills’ JoAnna Saad in 2:14.

However, Lackey saw her tournament end in the next round as South Western’s Natalie Handy pinned her in 1:35.

“I think the season overall for her was pretty good considering the circumstances, as far as practice goes. We were coming in with a very new team,” Lady Little Lions coach Eshia Willingham said. “I think maybe the smarter decision would have been for her to get more practice time with our boys team. However, she was a very integral part of our girls team. I told her today I was so proud to be part of her journey.”

Thursday’s action

Lackey made her first state championships after nearly winning a regional title last weekend.

Things were going well in her match with Souderton’s Emily Sarr as Lackey led 5-3 late in the second period.

Sarr earned a reversal on Lackey with 33 seconds left, and put her toward her back. Lackey was attempting to fight off the pin, but her arm got caught in Sarr’s singlet.

Sarr ended up finishing the pin off in 3:29.

“She went in calm, and was very prepared. I was excited to see what she put out,” Lady Little Lions coach Eshia Willingham said. “She did really well and took her time. She’s prepared for this moment. She just got caught up.”
