What time is the 2024 eclipse in the Central Valley?

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The eclipse happening on Monday will be the last total eclipse crossing the United States for the next 20 years, according to NASA. The Central Valley will experience a partial eclipse, but at what time will the eclipse be at its maximum in the valley?

NASA officials say the sky will appear slightly darker than it was before the eclipse for those who will experience a partial solar eclipse, depending on how much the Moon blocks the Sun in their location.

According to an interactive map by NASA, the Central Valley will see the beginning of the eclipse around 10:10 a.m. (10:14 a.m. seems to be the latest) and will experience the eclipse maximum point around 11 a.m.:

  • Visalia, Hanford, Porterville, Madera, Chowchilla, Merced, Los Banos, Dos Palos, Mendota, Kerman, and Lindsay will experience the maximum point of the eclipse at 11:14 a.m.

  • Fresno, Sanger, and Planada will be able to see the eclipse at its maximum point at 11:15 a.m.

  • The Yosemite Valley, Mariposa, and Oakhurst will experience the maximum point at 11:16 a.m.

Although this will be a partial eclipse, it is still recommended for anyone who wants to look at it to use proper eyecare. In Fresno, officials encourage residents to visit their local libraries to receive free solar viewing glasses while supplies last.

Fresno County libraries are giving away free solar glasses for the partial eclipse

Officials say sunglasses, eyeglasses with tinted lenses, and others are not sufficient to shield an individual’s eyes during a solar eclipse, and the only way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through glasses designed for viewing solar eclipses – or hand-held solar viewers manufactured for international safety standards.

For those who want to take a picture of the eclipse with their smartphone, NASA officials recommend having a specialized eclipse filter between their phone camera and the Sun. Click here for more detailed instructions.
