Central Piedmont, Lees-McRae to announce path to guaranteed admission

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Central Piedmont Community College and Lees-McRae College will announce a program that provides a pathway to a bachelor’s degree on Tuesday.

The Charlotte community and private Banner Elk colleges will sign an agreement at 9 a.m. to establish a Guaranteed Admission Program.

The Lees-McRae Guaranteed Admission Program (GAP) will automatically admit Central Piedmont students who have earned an Associate of Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, or Associate in Fine Arts degree and meet specific grade-point-average requirements. Students in the program will also be eligible to receive merit scholarships for up to 50 percent of Lees-McRae’s annual tuition.

The program will begin with the fall 2024 semester.

Central Piedmont president Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer and Lees-McRae College president Dr. Herbert King Jr. will sign the agreement in Charlotte.

Founded in 1963, Central Piedmont is the second-largest community college in the North Carolina Community College System and the largest in the Charlotte metro area. The school averages 40,000 students yearly and runs Charlotte’s public television station, WTVI.

Lees–McRae College, founded in 1900, enrolls less than 1,000 students. It is a private school affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Banner Elk is about a 2-hour, 30-minute drive from Central Piedmont’s campus.
