Central High School student’s family files civil lawsuit against school resource officers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) —On April 23, a verbal dispute occurred between a large group of students at Central High School. School resource officers attempted to resolve the situation, but Mesa County Deputy Phillip Peterson ended up putting one of the boys in what appeared to be a chokehold before taking him to the ground.

Another deputy, Michael Hand, was seen repeatedly threatening to tase the minor. The student’s grandmother, Linda Southam, initially agreed with the officer’s decision to take her grandson down.

However, she quickly changed her mind after viewing the video. The student’s lawyer, James Roberts, stated that they have filed a civil lawsuit against the officers.
