Central Dauphin hires Harrisburg superintendent by unanimous vote

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Central Dauphin Schools will have a new leader soon.

The school board voted unanimously Monday night to hire Eric Turman.

“Eric, we’re thrilled, thrilled, to have someone with your background, your talents, and your leadership abilities to lead our district,” said board president, Michael Jacobs.

Turman has been the superintendent at Harrisburg School District for three years. Turman says this is one of the hardest decisions he’s had to make.

“The hardest part for me was a lot of things were started and I’m always one that I try to finish what I start. So that’s what made the decision to leave probably one of the most difficult decisions I had to make,” said Turman.

He was announced previously as a finalist for the position.

“The search process has been thoughtful and rigorous, and I want to thank the board, our consultants, parents and the administration for their time, commitment and effort to make certain we could recommend an outstanding candidate for the position,” said Mike Jacobs, school board president earlier Monday.

Turman has served as superintendent for the Harrisburg School District for three years. Before then he was the principal of Reading High School for a decade. He spent over 20 years with the RHS district where he started as a fifth-grade teacher.

Consultants reviewed 22 applications and the board then chose five that best matched the profile being sought. First-round interviews were conducted on April 24 and 25. From those, three finalists were chosen.

Dr. Norman Miller resigned as CDSD superintendent on Feb. 1. Assistant superintendent Aaron McConnell has been serving as interim superintendent since then.

The Harrisburg School District released a statement on Friday that said, in part, “The Harrisburg School District is completely committed to ensuring that any leadership transitions occur thoughtfully and with full support for our students and staff. Central Dauphin’s School Board is expected to vote on the superintendent position on Monday, May 20. After that time, we will share additional information with our own school community regarding next steps in our leadership plans, including the timelines.”
