LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – For one college student in Little Rock it has always been her dream to help others through what she does best: sewing.

Echo Mitchell is from the small town of Fox, Arkansas, and is hoping to brighten many young girls’ faces with prom season just around the corner.

The 18-year-old said her love for sewing started at a young age.

“My passion for sewing started very young. I started with my grandmother when I was five years old,” Mitchell said. “It’s as close to a thing as magic was for me.”

Mitchell said she started her business Design by Echo when the pandemic began.

“Designs by Echo started around the time when I started taking commissions,” she said.

Mitchell said through the business she started in high school she began her passion project.

“The fairy godmother project is the prom dress project,” Mitchell said. “I started getting more and more dresses through purchasing myself or donations and it was kind of a goal of mine to give back.”

Mitchell is now a freshman at the University of Central Arkansas and said she spent some of her spring break at her old high school cafeteria, along with bringing 100 donated dresses for an event she created, Prom Dress Shopping Day.

“I started it to help people who couldn’t afford a dress or didn’t want to spend the money on one,” Mitchell said.

She said the event for the dresses was all free and she could make alterations for the girls, also without a cost.

“Each time I give these girls a dress they walk out with a smile on their face,” Mitchell said.

By giving out dresses, Mitchell is hoping to give girls that story-book confidence.

“I grew up playing Cinderella and grew up to be the fairy godmother,” Mitchell said.
