Central American migrants cross river into Mexico

Hundreds of Central Americans traveling in a new migrant caravan attempted to storm into Mexico on Monday, crossing a river that divides the country from Guatemala.

Video footage showed some parents carrying their children across.

Then, a tense standoff with some throwing rocks at members of Mexico's National Guard, who were there to prevent the migrants from crossing illegally.

The new caravan presents a new challenge for Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in his efforts to stem the flow of migrants, as he faces pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who's threatened to punish Mexico and other Central American countries economically if they fail to stop them.

According to Guatemala, at least 4,000 people entered the country from Honduras since Wednesday, making for one of the biggest surges in migration since three Central American governments signed agreements with the Trump administration that require them to step up their efforts to deal with migrants.
