Some Center High School seniors not allowed to walk at graduation after prank

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some Center High School seniors say they won’t be able to walk across the stage at graduation this Thursday due to a senior prank.

Shaila Williams, a graduating senior, said she and more than 20 other center high school seniors took part in a prank, and now she and some others have to skip walking the stage at Thursday night’s graduation.

“More than 20 seniors were there doing the prank, but only some of the seniors left. The seniors that stayed that wanted to clean up and take accountability, they put us into the office and told us we couldn’t even walk or clean up the mess that we had caused,” Shaila Williams said.  “Seniors that left, they are still able to walk (at graduation).”

Her mother, Latisha Williams, wants to see the situation addressed differently.

“I feel bad for them taking this moment away from them. They worked hard for 13 years. This is a very special moment,” Latisha Williams said. “I feel like they can come up with other repercussions for this if they feel like they went overboard or weren’t supposed to do the prank.”

“So, I feel like by them all taking accountability of their actions, willing to clean up, take all the other alternatives such as not participating in other graduation activities, let them do that. Don’t take this moment away from them,” Latisha Williams said.

Her daughter admitted the senior prank involved baby oil and moving desks out of classrooms and into the hallways on the first and second floors.

Working for you, FOX4 asked The Center School district for comment on the situation, but so far, we are still waiting for a response.

“The senior class president knew about the prank and she also was aware of the prank, and she did not let us know not to do the senior prank,” Shaila Williams explained.”We gave that information out on social media and let them know that we were doing a prank. We weren’t informed at all not to do the prank.”

Williams and some others involved offered to skip senior breakfast and other activities leading up to graduation instead of missing out on walking across the stage.

“We offered to take those as our consequences, but taking away a memorable moment for us walking the stage, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, taking that away, I don’t think it’s a fair consequence,” Shaila Williams said. “We just want to walk the stage. We just want to celebrate the 13 years that we’ve been here, K-12th.”

Shaila Williams told FOX4 that some of the students involved may have been given other consequence options besides missing out on walking the stage at graduation, but she and others were not.

Her mom, Latisha, wants to see her daughter walk across the stage and celebrate the milestone.

“Don’t take this moment away from them. This is not only for her but for me. I went through those 13 years with her. I would love to see my daughter, walk the stage,” Latisha Williams explained. “So you’re not only taking it away from the students, you’re taking away from the parents and family that’s traveling, coming from out of town.”
