Celine Dion Talks About Her Husband’s Death on ‘Today’

Celine Dion joined Matt Lauer on Today, where she talked about the recent passing of her husband, René Angélil, who died of cancer in January. She told Lauer how hard it was to see him suffer and how long of a journey it has been.

Of her three children, Dion said, “When I feel good, the kids are feeling great. And when the kids are feeling great, I’m feeling good.”

Dion also co-hosted the last hour of the show with Kathie Lee Gifford, whose husband, Frank, died in August of last year. Once again, Dion talked about her kids and how she explained the situation to her two youngest — 5-year-old twins — in a way that they could understand.

Though both Dion and Gifford have suffered incredible loss, they were able to laugh through the tears. Dion was surprised when a box of tissues dropped down from above, and then she started singing the Eric Clapton classic “Tears in Heaven” and said the tissues came from heaven. This caused Gifford to say, “You’re a really strange person.”
