Celebrating local first responders for National EMS Week

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) – It’s the 50th anniversary of National EMS Week, a time to show gratitude to those who serve on the front lines of Emergency Medical Services.

Longview Regional Medical Center is recognizing first responders by hosting a lunch cookout for them May 21-24.

“Longview Fire Department, CHRISTUS EMS, or Camp County, or any of our surrounding areas they’re committed to the highest level of quality for our community,” said Nikke Knapp, Registered Nurse and Director of Emergency Services At Longview Medical Center.

The lunch cookout is meant to show support for those serving on the front lines.

“So, a lot of times we only get to see these other first responders during the course of an emergency, so this is an opportunity for us to get together, fellowship, grab a bite for lunch,” said Longview Fire Marshal Kevin May.

Nikke Knapp is a registered nurse and Director of Emergency Services at LRMC, she explained how dedication is what makes those serving on the front lines so special.

“Whether it’s a heart attack, or a stroke, or they’re involved in some sort of massive trauma, the commitment that it takes from these ladies and gentlemen to be the front line responders is just huge,” Knapp said.

May has served in the EMS field for nearly 35 years, and he said they often bring their job home with them.

“EMS is a job that you don’t ever really step away from. It’s just that drive that we all have in us to want to make the world a little bit better,” May said.

This week you can support EMS by showing gratitude.

“Just say thank you, and that goes a long way with all of us in the healthcare community but especially for our first responders,” Knapp said.
