BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — During the last legislative session, the Governor’s Success Council received $100,000. The Council’s chairman and the governor’s office decided to give back to the state and develop the Cedric Richmond Scholarship.

“We wanted to ensure that our African American males have the opportunity to continue to go on and receive some sort of postsecondary education, to be able to continue to be better for their families,” Chandler Vidrine, executive director of the Governor’s Success Council said.

The Cedric Richmond Scholarship is administered through the Governor’s Council on the Success of Black Men and Boys. Vidrine said the program is accessible to Black male students with a financial need.

“And not have to worry about the financial barrier because we know that’s a huge issue for our African American students in this state,” Vidrine said.

Vidrine said the goal is to give $1,000 to 100 black male students in the state.

“Our main goal is to ensure we are awarding students who demonstrate that they are amazing and phenomenal students and that they are dedicated and that they want to continue to be huge advocates for higher education, huge advocates for their own families. But also knowing education is their top priority,” Vidrine said. “I know how imperative it is to ensure that we are removing any type of barriers for higher education to our students in this state. And I know this is one step towards that goal.”
